Regeneration, Pond and a R***r S**g
I will try not to spoil the episode for people but if you have not seen ep 1 of the new series of Doctor Who you might want to skip this post. I won’t say anything on the plot directly but if you are wanting to watch the series knowing as little as possible or want to make your own opinions then please steer clear.
Onto the post…
Doctor Who started again today! Woo! It feels like a long time since I have had a 13 episode run to look forward to on a weekly basis. The specials, while entertaining were few and far between to really get a fill of Who.
If you live in the UK or are a fan of the series you will know that David Tennant left the role calling for a regeneration to happen. I, like a lot of others were sad to see Tennant go, however I was also looking forward to the new direction that the series would go in with a new Doctor, along with a new producer. I always thought it would be better if Tennant left on a high. I hate to say it, but in some of the specials of last year he seemed to be more, going through the motions than enjoying it as much as he seemed to in series 2-4.
Well, I have to say I was not at all disappointed. I don’t want to say too much about the episode as I know some people won’t have seen it yet (I am working on that… honest) but it was good.
Matt Smith brings a different angle to the Doctor and is also completely believable as the Timelord. From the get go I was ready to accept him and did not miss Doc 10 at all. He had big shoes to fill but did so and could easily go up a size or two.
Along with the new doc we were also treated to a new companion in Amy Pond. With the doctor, as soon as she was on screen I was happy to accept her as the new cast regular. She and the Doc seemed to bounce of each other well and I am glad that for once the main companion seems not to have any immediate family. There is Rory and and few friends but no parents or siblings to worry over. Which, after 4 series’ of companions with close families (although I loved each of these families in their own ways) it is good to again take a change of direction. I am sure there will still be episodes during the season that are set on earth but these may be fewer without the need to return to a family.
In a related stance it is refreshing to have a companion not live in
At the end of the episode we were treated to a longer than expected preview of what is to come and it is all looking good!
I had known River Song (did you decipher my asterisks in the title?) was to return and can’t say I was looking forward to it too much. I enjoyed the episodes that she was in in series 4 and know there are unanswered questions but I was happy for them to stay that way. However, after seeing the preview I am quite intrigued to find out what she is doing back.
Along with that we have the return of The Weeping Angels, Daleks, Cybermen and a plethora of of good guys (a rumour for one that might be in next weeks episode is very intriguing) and villains to look forward to I am sure this is going to be a fantastic series of Doctor Who.
